This lakeshore city and port situated at the mouth of the Grand River in southwest Michigan was first settled in 1834. Today it has an estimated population of 12,200. Its economy relies largely on port activities such as produce shipping, charter fishing, sport fishing, and recreational boating; it is also the location of a Coast Guard base.
A 21⁄2-mile boardwalk with shops and restaurants follows Grand River’s south bank from downtown to Grand Haven State Park, on the sandy lakefront. Along the way is the Tri-Cities Historical Museum, featuring a “puffer belly” steam locomotive and three rail cars. Great Lakes fishing boats dock nearby at Chinook Pier, and for a bird’s-eye view, the Michigan Balloon Corporation offers hot-air balloon flights.
Grand Haven is located 10 miles south of Muskegon on Hwy 31 and 30 miles west of Grand Rapids on I-96. Muskegon County Airport services the area.
Cars are essential. Accommodation is limited to campsites in Grand Haven State Park (these need to be reserved) and basic motels. Dining options are limited.
