Indianola, MS Summary
Indianola photo

In the heart of the Mississippi Delta’s prime cotton country, Indianola (population 11,809) began as a lumbermill settlement in 1886. Today the town’s blues heritage is its primary attraction. BB King (born Riley B. King) began life in neighboring Itta Bena. A stroll through downtown Indianola is full of constant reminders of the bluesman’s association with the town, including a street and park named for him and the imprints of his hand and foot embedded into the sidewalk at the corner of Second and Church Streets. Music fills Indianola in the first weekend of June during BB King’s Homecoming festival. The town was also home to civil rights activist, Fannie Lou Hamer.
