This small mid-Missouri college town (population 10,000) is the site where Winston Churchill gave his famous “Iron Curtain” speech about the implications of a divided, Cold War Europe, on March 5, 1946.
Fittingly, a section of the toppled Berlin Wall now stands on the campus of Fulton’s Westminster College.
It is part of the Winston Churchill Memorial and Library, whose focal point is the Church of St Mary, Aldermanbury. The 800-year-old original church was destroyed by the Great Fire of London in 1666.
The architect Christopher Wren rebuilt the church, but this second building was damaged during the 1940 London Blitz. The remaining walls and columns were shipped to Fulton, then reassembled as a tribute to Churchill. In its basement there is a library, gallery, and museum with World War II memorabilia.
Columbia Regional Airport is 20 miles from Fulton.
