Sleep...So Much Sweeter Here

cowchipclyde's rating:

"This is one hotel that has it all! There's a mall, a foodcourt, and at least one high-end restaraunt(I don't think I ever saw the whole place!) plus a gym and an indoor jungle of sorts. For a bit of history, walk right across the road to Union Station and admire the beautiful, magnificent architecture of times gone by. The best feature of the hotel itself: the bed and all it's dressings! These beds are better than any simple person has at home, you can even buy the comforter and sheet set if you wish (worth the investment!) All in all: I want to go back to Kansas City just for the Westin!!!"

It's a crapshoot

Jools' rating:

"The Westin is attached to Crown Center and is in a great location, but you don't want to spend a lot of money to stay here; quality can be wildly hit or miss. Sometimes it's nice, sometimes it's dreadful, and you never really know which one it will be. A few years ago a group of my best friends came to Kansas City for my birthday and we stayed here; all our rooms were great, service was good and all my friends had a wonderful time. The next year I stayed here for two nights and had a horrible, horrible time. The plumbing in the ceiling above my room was so loud that I asked to be moved after the first night; I had the same experience the second night in a different room six floors lower. The front desk sent security (?) to look into the issue; needless to say, that did not help. Moral of that weekend: 1) Don't stay in a room in the middle of the hallway – request a room near the elevators or all the way at the end of the hall, and 2) don't expect the staff to be helpful unless you really push the issue, and even then, there are no guarantees.A few more things to consider: Unless you get up at 6 a.m., you'll probably be awakened by the housekeeping staff, some of whom actually yell down the hall to one another before 8 a.m. And if the housekeeping staff doesn't wake you up, the slamming of guest room doors will - they are ungodly loud, and you'll be able to clearly hear someone's door slamming halfway down the hall. And unless you like humid, too-warm bedrooms, don't stay here during the summer. You'll have a thermostat in your room that you can adjust, but don't expect that to in any way affect the temperature in your room. And if you're sensitive to cigarette smoke, be aware that although the hotel is now smoke-free, rooms that used to be smoking rooms still smell like they used to be smoking rooms – apparently the Westin didn’t spend the money for new carpeting or upholstery, and didn’t clean the old ones very well, either, so the stench is still there. The last time I stayed here, for a quick weekend getaway, I got a great deal through Starwood's rewards program – a room for two for $59. For $59, we were willing to overlook the fact that housekeeping had ignored what appeared to be an unfortunate mascara mishap – there was mascara on the comforter (too hot in the room to use a comforter, anyway, so that was thrown on the floor), on the mirror in the bathroom, on the shower curtain and on the toilet. Which brings me to the other serious drawback here: housekeeping. We overlooked the mascara incident, but we did call the front desk after finding an expired, half-empty bottle of curdled milk in the minibar (not to mention a rusted tin of cookies – yuck); clearly the minibar hadn't been inventoried recently. So, if you're planning to visit in the winter (or you like to sleep in a tropical climate), the Westin is a fine choice – the Heavenly Beds are probably the most comfy beds in any Kansas City hotel and the location is great, especially during the Christmas holidays. Just don't pay more than $125 for a room, don't stay in a room in the center of the hallway, don’t expect top-notch service and don't be surprised if you have to call housekeeping at least once to take care of something that they really should've taken care of when they cleaned up after the previous guest."
