The beautiful Fox Theatre in St. Louis – where dance- and theater-loving locals get gussied up to enjoy ballets and Broadway tours such as Phantom of the Opera and Movin’ Out – was a diamond in William Fox’s movie dynasty when it opened as a movie palace in 1929. Fox lost his fortune in the great stock market crash, but the glory of the Fox Theatre lives on, thanks to a major restoration in 1981. The C. Howard Crane-designed theater boasts the original 2,000-pound chandelier that hangs from the dome in the Mosque-like auditorium, gilded velvet throne chairs in the lobby and a giant Wurlitzer organ – one of only five of its kind ever made. If you were smart enough to book tickets to an event at the Fox Theatre during your St. Louis visit, nice job. If not, don’t worry – tours are given three days a week, and some of them include a performance by St. Louis native Stan Kann, who has played the famous Wurlitzer for 22 years. Step into the Fox Theatre and picture yourself as one of those amazed St. Louisans, dressed up in your fur wrap or tuxedo, enjoying the spectacle of opening night.
