Tiffany glass and detailed carvings make the Grand Hall — now serving as the lobby of the Hyatt Regency hotel — at Union Station one of the most beautiful rooms in the United States. Stare up at the romantic archways and stunning architecture and transport yourself back to the elegance that was Union Station 100 years ago. Once one of the largest and busiest train terminals in the country, Union Station now houses restaurants, specialty shops and the Hyatt Regency in the beautiful, Romanesque-style building that was built in 1894. The stained-glass windows and turn-of-the-century ambience of the Grand Hall are truly the highlight of Union Station — the businesses and restaurants in the rest of the building are mostly chain and tourist shops. Don’t miss the Whispering Arch just inside the main entrance of the Grand Hall, where everyone from eager children to curious businessmen can be seen looking up in amazement. Not as well publicized as a certain other arch in town, the Whispering Arch has an acoustic trick — if you stand against the marble wall and whisper a secret, it can be heard by another person standing on the other side of the arch 40 feet away.

Quick visit for lunch and shopping

"On a short vacation to St. Louis we found ourselves available for a quick trip over to union station on the St Louis Metro-Link. From downtown, where we were staying, you can take the train to a number of stops to include Union Station for free between the hours of 11:30 and 1:30. During the small amount of time that we had we were able to eat lunch and shop at a few stores. We even had time to visit the whispering wall which is a unique phenomenon caused by the design of an arch at one of the entrances. If you stand at one side of the arch and speak quietly toward the wall your voice will carry over the arch to the person standing on the other side. Many proposals were said to have taken place here. Though the famous show at the fudge factory was under way when we got there we didn’t have time to stop and watch. If you come to Union Station you really need to stop and watch this show. Oh and don’t forget to have some fudge too!"

"“So very charming what they did with Union Station,” said Hattie with a nostalgic glimmer in her eye. Hattie is a lifelong St. Louis resident born in 1921-or, the sort of ghost that you conjure up, if you are I, as you walk through this historic space."
