The real Barbary Coast in Northern Africa was a terrifying place for a long time. Pirates and natives made sure nobody was really welcome. The Barbary Coast in the heart of Las Vegas, on the other hand, welcomes one and all. Barbary Coast is a smaller casino compared to the giants that surround it, but it is quietly confident and its guests enjoy some of the best service in town. A few simple touches in the guest rooms will remind you of the actual Barbary coast – leopard-print pillows in a chair, for example. For the most part, however, charming Victorian decor abounds, with elegant bed curtains, soft pastel colors, brass headboards, and art prints that would be at home in a Devonshire country estate.
The Barbary Coast is also home to Drai’s, the latest brainchild of Hollywood producer and restaurateur Victor Drai. This warm, elegant and inviting restaurant downstairs in the casino made its mark immediately when it opened in 1997 and it hasn’t missed a beat since. The decor is warm and inviting, with soft ambient lighting, palm trees, and cushy couches. In keeping with the Barbary theme, menus and plates feature a leopard print. Even if you aren’t a fan of animal print decor, five words should get you on the phone for reservations: Seven Hour Leg of Lamb. Crisp duck and tender crab cakes are also favorites. The action at Drai’s keeps going into the night. After the chefs go home, the bartenders come alive, making Drai’s an unlikely hot spot in Las Vegas. It’s a lounge, it’s a living room, and it’s an extremely pleasant after-hours spot. Things usually heat up about 3 a.m. But if you’re not inside early, you’ll have a tough time getting through. VIP passes are your best bet.
The gaming at Barbary Coast is on a smaller scale, but you don’t feel like you’re missing out. If anything, the more intimate ambience gives it all a personal touch that some of the larger casinos can’t achieve. Barbary Coast is like your favorite alternative band, your favorite independent film, or your favorite unknown getaway: You’ve got to be in the know to truly appreciate it.
