After the success of Mystère, Cirque du Soleil branched out thematically as well as visually with O. Playing at the Bellagio, this show’s theme is the circle and cycle of life. The acrobats, dancers and swimmers of O take you on a fantastic symphony through time and space. Lavish, trippy sets, surreal feats of strength and seamless choreography rule the day here. Everything that was decadent and arresting about Mystère (the movement, the arcs of the acrobats’ bodies, the celebration of what the human body can portray without words) is reimagined in O. The visual extravagance of Cirque du Soleil shows has become a given, but perhaps none is so lavish as O. Moving through elemental sets representing earth and fire all the way to a 1.5 million gallon aquatic set, performers achieve physical feats that appear impossible. With contortionists who seem to have been born without bones and men who possess the strength of Cronus, O is appropriately named; the title reflects the shape of the eyes and mouth, as they appear when widened in amazement.
