MEREDITH, four miles north of Weirs Beach, is the last of Lake Winnipesaukee’s resorts. The Inn at Mill Falls, Rte-3 (tel 603/279-7006 or 1-800/622-MILL, ; $75-160), is an exceptionally comfortable place to stay overnight; rooms at the Chieftain Motor Lodge, 95 Pleasant St (tel 603/279-8584, ; $75-100), are much more basic, though the lakeside setting is nice enough. Inside the Chase House Inn at Mill Falls (along Rte-3), Camp (tel 603/279-3003) is a good place for seafood or chicken pot pie, while Mame’s (tel 603/279-4631), at 8 Plymouth St, serves tavern fare in an old village home.
The Winnipesaukee Railroad (tel 603/745-2135, ) operates two-hour scenic trips ($9.50; $6.95 for picnic lunch) along the lakeshore between Meredith and Weirs Beach, at weekends from the last Monday in May and then several times daily from mid-June to early September, including special fall foliage excursions.
