Summary of Petroglyph National Monument
Petroglyph National Monument
6001 Unser Blvd NW
Albuquerque, NM 87120
505-899-0205
This was the first national monument dedicated to prehistoric art. Fifteen thousand petroglyphs, or prehistoric pictures, and five extinct volcanoes are found on this serpentine escarpment of volcanic rock located west of Albuquerque. White or gray lines are chipped into the dark rock. Petroglyphs here date from AD 700 to 1200. Between the fourteenth and seventeenth centuries BC, the Tiwa carved animals, birds, people, flute players, and kachina figures. They are reached by four short trails on the million-year-old lava flow.
Albuquerque has an international airport, and bus and train service.
