Ruidoso is a resort set in the White Mountain Wilderness Area of south-central New Mexico. Skiing, hiking, camping, fishing, cycling, hunting, and horseback riding are the activities in this town of 4,500, which is at 6,900 feet, where the hills are covered with pine, cedar, and aspen. Ruidoso Downs Racetrack runs quarter horses and thoroughbreds from early May to early September. The Hubbard Museum of the American West focuses on the horse and its role in American history, and exhibits saddles, carriages, surreys, a Conestoga wagon, and a 12-passenger stagecoach that goes back to 1866. Ruidosa is serviced by buses.
