Take a handsome old building with an eclectic past, add well-designed furniture, wireless Internet and a dash of architectural whimsy. Open up a rooftop bar and serve pricey fusion cocktails. Mix well. Recipe yields one hipster hotel. The sleek, beautifully renovated Maritime Hotel, originally designed in the 1960s for the National Maritime Museum, opened its doors as a boutique hotel a couple of years ago and has been drawing a trendy, upscale crowd ever since. The nautically themed rooms boast five-foot porthole windows overlooking the Hudson River, along with all the amenities that have become de rigueur for boutique hotels: flat-screen TVs, designer bath products, and high-thread-count sheets. In a city where space is at a premium, what really sets the Maritime apart are its ample public spaces, including two gorgeous restaurants, the Italian La Bottega, with a whopping 10,000-foot terrace, and Matsuri, a stunning Japanese restaurant with an exquisite, Asian-influenced decor that’s matched by its delectable cuisine.
