New York City has long been celebrated as the arts and entertainment capital of the world, thanks in large part to the spectacular Lincoln Center, the city’s unparalleled cultural center. The astounding range of performances includes world music extravaganzas, jazz, opera, ballet, and soaring classical concerts. Even if you’re not taking in a show, it’s well worth strolling about the elegant complex just to admire the splendid facades of Avery Fisher Hall and the Metropolitan Opera, among others, or to kick back on a bench amid the architectural splendor and soak up a few rays. Take time to explore, and follow stairs up to wonderful vistas of Manhattan and Central Park. If you come by in the early evening, you’ll see Lincoln Center in all its lit-up glory, and can observe New Yorkers arriving in all their finery to attend a performance. Though shows can be pricey, you’ll find plenty of ways to save a few bucks; at the Avery Fisher Hall, for example, you can sometimes catch rehearsals on Thursday nights at a discounted price. The Lincoln Center also offers excellent student discounts for most of their programs, including Great Performers, Mostly Mozart, the Lincoln Center Festival, and American Songbook.
