Amid the wheeling and dealing of Wall Street sits the neo-Gothic, 1846 Trinity Church, a quiet refuge from the downtown hubbub. The church has long played an important religious and social role in Lower Manhattan, and this was especially evident during and after the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center, which loomed just a few blocks away. Hundreds sought refuge at the church, and even more took advantage of the church’s central location to post signs about missing loved ones. You’ll find several poignant memorials, both outside and within the church, commemorating those who lost their lives during the attacks. Trinity Church’s soothing graveyard is also worth a look, both to spy the tombstones of the many well-known Americans buried here, including Alexander Hamilton, and to enjoy a ruminative moment amid the quiet, shaded greenery.
