As well-founded as the aims of the United Nations may be, the complex itself, particularly the meeting halls and conference rooms, is rather dated and characterless. The few exceptions are the renowned General Assembly Hall (regular sessions usually run from mid-September to mid-December) and the Security Council Chamber. To get an up-close view of these, take the guided U.N. tour, where international guides – some better than others – deliver interesting historical and political anecdotes along the way. Keep your eyes peeled for the unique gifts bestowed upon the U.N. headquarters from nations around the world, including works by Picasso, Chagall, and Norman Rockwell. For a relaxing stroll, make for the U.N.’s fragrant rose gardens that unfold along the East River, with more than 30 varieties of roses. Note that while visiting the U.N., you’re not on official U.S. territory. The18-acre complex is an international zone, with its very own stamps and post office.

"If you are going to visit the UN, definitely take the guided tour. Tour guide delivered great information about the history of the UN, how meetings are conducted, and pointed out gifts to the US from other countries displayed throughout the building. Interesting historical tour."
