Since the Museum opened in 1897, it has been one of the highlights of the citys cultural map. The exhibits are located in a building designed by architect Stanford White. Choose among Pacific, African and New World art, Asian art, Egyptian and ancient Middle Eastern art, decorative art, European, American and contemporary painting and sculpture. The collection of Egyptian art is vast, and the American section includes pieces by masters Thomas Eakins and John Singer Sargent.Admission: $6 for adults, $2 for students and seniors; free for children under 12.

Bigger and Better than expected

JordyC's rating:

"I try to make a point of visiting as many museums as possible. I’m not a big fan of seeing the same exhibit time and time again, but if things have changed you can pretty much bet I’ll be game to go. Between MOMA, the Whitney, the Gugg, and occasional visists to the Met, I thought I was doing pretty well – but I’d never been to the Brooklyn. For starters, it is much, much bigger than I expected. I would say it is definitely bigger than the Whitney, perhaps even surpassing the Gugg in size. Obviously, that’s a very rough comparison, and I could be flat wrong, but I’ll say this – it took my girlfriend and I a good 3 hours to cover 1 floor and some of a second. It is a 5 floor museum, and I think at least 3 if not 4 are open all of the time. The suggested admission is slightly higher than claimed in the overview: $8 for adults, $4 for students, but that’s not too bad really. You might not see a whole armful of Picasso’s and Pollock’s, but they have a TON of great artists I had never heard of before. Its mainly American, and organized in this kinda odd, encyclopedic hap-hazard fashion – but they have impeccable taste, and create some really interesting juxtapositions other museums don’t seem as concerned with. If you want to see great art and great artists slightly off the beaten path, this is the place for you!"
