This museum, founded in 1988, is dedicated to all the immigrants who came to New York City during the 1800s, but in particular to the occupants of this one-time tenement on Orchard Street. See life as new Americans experienced it in Chinatown, Little Italy and elsewhere on the Lower East Side through photos, displays and memorabilia. The gallery is free.

Interesting experience

ohsostrange's rating:

"The Tenement Museum is a surprisingly nice way to spend a few hours. The guides are knowledgeable and love their subject. I'd advise against taking all four guided tours on the same trip, as you'll hear a lot of the same information more than once, but you can take two of their one-hour tours back to back without running the danger of being bored. Their visitor center, where all of the tours start, is an excellent little bookstore and worth the trip all by itself. It's an interesting neighborhood to walk through once your tours are over. Lots of little businesses to shop in and beautiful old buildings to see."
