This museum places an emphasis on modern American art. It has grown in popularity in recent years, and thanks to an expansion in 1998 there is now a permanent collection on display. Select pieces are housed in the Leonard and Evelyn Lauder Galleries on the fifth floor, including art by Edward Hopper, Georgia OKeeffe, and Alexander Calder. The building itself is an extraordinary sight, designed by Marcel Breuer, it resembles an upside down pyramid. Admission is $10 for adults, $8 for students and seniors, free for children under 12.

Worth an hour or two

ohsostrange's rating:

"Not much of a permanent collection, but they tend to have fun special exhibits of the sort of work you wouldn't expect to see given gallery space someplace better, like the Met, MOMA or the Guggenheim. I'd suggest checking their web space to see what's being featured currently before deciding whether to go. Decent little gift shop and cafe downstairs."
