New Yorkers may pay through the nose to live in apartments the size of walk-in closets, but they’ve got a backyard that suburbanites can only dream of: 843 acres of gorgeously designed urban parkland filled with every activity and amenity from an Olympic-sized outdoor pool to two ice-skating rinks, a massive reservoir, a nature center housed in a castle, a Swedish marionette theater, two zoos, and miles and miles of jogging, walking, horseback riding, and biking trails. Designed in 1853 by Frederick Law Olmstead and Calvertn Vaux, Central Park may seem like a get-away-from-it-all wilderness, but it’s actually meticulously laid out and maintained. Paths wind around to deliver postcard-perfect views of the grand Bethesda Fountain and Terrace or the elegant Bow Bridge; the popular Wollman Ice Rink seems to nestle between the grand old buildings framing the park; and the Reservoir’s jogging path offers stunningly unobstructed views of both skyline and sky. Events happen in the park year round, but don’t miss the New York Marathon in the fall and summer’s free Shakespeare in the Park and Summerstage concerts.

Central Park has it all

komodokd's rating:

"Central park is great during all seasons. In the winter there are 2 ice skating rinks to use. In the warmer months the north rink becomes a pool and the south rink becomes a carnival. There are two main bike trails, a short and long loop. If you don’t want to bring your own bike you can use the bike rental service for a small fee. There are several rock formations that boulderers like to use. If you want to do rock climbing with ropes there is a recreation center with a rock wall. The recreation center also offers classes on popular activities such as yoga and tai chi. Several basketball courts, playgrounds, and lawns around the park. Baseball fields are always used in the spring and summer. People watching is easy to do here. You can also search for all of the statues through out the park. Big events are held on the great lawn, such as the ellen show, and broadway under the stars"

"Central Park is the perfect nature getaway from New York’s Concrete Jungle. When you’re in the middle of all the trees and streams, it really does feel like you’re in a forrest. I also like the Great Lawn where on weekends people sunbathe, play baseball, play soccer, or just relax."

The Heart of the City

"What can you say about so much green space in the center of the World’s greatest City? There’s so much to explore, you can spend a day lost in its glory. Definitely take a walk by Belvedere Castle, which has been featured in many a movie. Another favorite is the pond, where you can rent remote-control boats to sail. Or, if you’re like me, just be lazy and bring a blanket and a good book and enjoy the best NYC past-time of them all – people watching. "
