Since its debut season in the fall of 1948, the New York City Ballet has evolved into one of the premiere companies in the country, with an inspired repertory developed by dance wizards George Balanchine, Jerome Robbins(no comma) and Peter Martins. Thanks to Balanchine’s vision, the NYC Ballet has long been recognized for its modern performances and lyrical adaptations of classic and contemporary composers, including the beloved annual holiday performance of Tschaikovsky’s The Nutcracker. Even if you don’t catch a performance, it’s worth taking a gander at the sumptuous theater, designed by Philip Johnson, that looms over the south side of the Lincoln Center Plaza. Behind the grand front doors, sweeping, plush stairs lead to a lavish auditorium featuring five “rings,” or balconies, and a spherical chandelier that hangs from a gold-paneled ceiling.
