Hands-down one of the best free attractions in New York City, the Staten Island Ferry provides great views of the Lower Manhattan skyline, the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. Keep in mind that this is not strictly for tourists. The Staten Island Ferry carries zombie-like nine-to-fivers to and from work each day. You’ll find them sitting inside getting their morning dose of coffee and newspapers, so stick to the deck and watch the boats go by in the harbor. As you leave Manhattan’s Whitehall Terminal, grab a spot on the right side of the boat for the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island views. When you get to St. George’s Terminal, you’ll have to leave the boat and hop on another. Head to the front of the boat this time because the skyline views of downtown are well worth the time spent.
