Summary of Union Square
Union Square
14th-17th Street | (Broadway and Park)
New York, NY
Vibrant Union Square, with noisy, taxi-packed Broadway shooting north and south of it, emits a palpable urban buzz. An impressive statue of George Washington astride a horse looms in the center, around which you can stroll along shaded pathways and then park yourself on a bench to take in all the frenetic activity. The square boasts a long political history, and has been the site of numerous rallies, protests and vigils; after the September 11 attacks, the square served as one of the city’s main gathering spots. For fresh produce, browse the fragrant stalls of the Union Square Farmers’ Market, generally held four days a week. Ringing the square are bustling restaurants and cafes, many with sun-speckled outdoor seating. In the last few years, discount stores and a new Whole Foods Market have snapped up the prime real estate in the area, drawing crowds of shoppers on the weekends. For a view that rivals those of the choicest restaurants, head to the second floor of the Whole Foods, where you can enjoy an organic sandwich or salad while looking down at the treetops.
