Summary of Washington Square Park
Washington Square Park
West 4th Street
New York, NY 10001

Washington Square Park offers a taste of the type of diversity – from purple-haired dogs to roller-skating performers – that gives New York its appeal. It’s a much more quaint and less tourist-oriented alternative to the often-formidable Central Park. Located in Greenwich Village, Washington Square Park sits snugly in the heart of New York University campus, and the young population contributes to the scene’s energy. Tourists and locals alike often gravitate toward this cultural center. Grab a snack and beverage from one of the local grocery markets along the edge of the park and relax while you people-watch. The park is a venue for a half-dozen free shows; musicians meander through the park and sometimes join in with one another for improvised collaborations. An added perk for tourists who value all things pop culture: The fountain in the square is the same one featured in the opening credits of the sitcom phenom “Friends.” History buffs can get their fix, as well. At one edge of the park stands the Washington Arch, which was finished in 1895 and stands as a memorial to George Washington’s inauguration. Very few parks manage to immortalize both Jennifer Aniston and a Founding Father.
