Summary of Balthazar Restaurant
Like bees to honey, New Yorkers swarm to Balthazar, NoHo’s answer to a fin de siècle Paris brasserie. Known for its terrific, sauce-laden brunches – you can’t go wrong with the Eggs Norwegian, poached eggs and velvety smoked salmon topped with hollandaise – Balthazar also shines at dinner, offering a succulent steak frite_, _sautéed black cod, and multi-tiered platters of oysters, clams, and shrimp. In keeping with its French roots, Balthazar is an inviting spot for a romantic rendezvous, either at the gleaming bar or the leather banquettes, where you can cuddle under lazily spinning fans, fresh-cut flowers in enormous vases, and aged mirrors reflecting rows of wine. More than 300 bottles of wine are on offer, from Bordeaux to Burgundy, both of which pair well with any of the superb hors d’oeuvres, such as the chicken liver and foie gras mousse. Whatever time of day, Balthazar’s infectious atmosphere is hard to resist, especially once you’ve caught a voyeuristic glimpse of it through the soaring windows overlooking Spring Street.
