Summary of Magnolia Bakery
With a cult following that would rival Radiohead’s, Magnolia Bakery has New Yorkers behaving like kids in a candy store. Perfectly swirled icing sits atop a rich, buttery cake, perfectly accessorized with colorful sprinkles: Manhattan’s new “it” food, the cupcake. Innocent and simple, the Magnolia Bakery is reminiscent of an old-fashioned bakeshop where Betty Crocker herself might have whipped up your lemon icebox cake or legendary banana pudding. Replace Betty with Village funksters and you have Magnolia. Even the not-so-innocent Sex and the City girls have stuffed their mouths full of the sugary sweets that would weaken any Atkins devotee. For less than two dollars a pop, these cheap-chic cakes are like biting into a bit of nostalgia that Miss Bradshaw might claim is better than sex. Probably not, but close.
