For all its tourist trappings, Tavern on the Green is the real deal, a storied piece of Manhattan history that should be on every visitor’s itinerary, if only for a peek inside as you explore Central Park. From its humble beginnings in 1870 as a sheepfold, when it housed 200 sheep that grazed in the park, to its rise, fall, and rise once again as one of Manhattan’s signature restaurants, the Tavern on the Green has gamely evolved with the times – a true key to its success. You can dine on the outdoor garden terrace, under the soft glow of lanterns, amid bright bouquets of flowers and Central Park foliage, or in the fin-de-siecle _dining room with crystal chandeliers and stained glass windows. Over the years, Tavern on the Green has feted countless politicians and movie stars, and hosted Broadway show opening night receptions and film premieres, from _Cat on a Hot Tin Roof to Woody Allen’s Crimes and Misdemeanors. The contemporary American cuisine is fine, though pricey for what you get. If you’re on a budget, go for the Garden Bar menu (service starts at 5 p.m.), with tasty appetizers, like a grilled chicken quesadilla heaped with avocado or a crispy bruschetta, that you can wash down with a cocktail or two.

Great to do at least once in Life

"We enjoyed dinner at Tavern on the Green during Restaurant Week. Reading the reviews prior to going, we knew that most likely we'd be in for a touristy experience but wanted to try it our for ourselves. We ate in the Crystal Room, which was decorated in a fairy-tale of pastel colors and chandeliers. It was quite lovely with the trees outside festooned with little white lights, and knowing that kitsch is what sells Tavern, this suited us just fine. However, we were a bit disgruntled by the photographers standing by each table, asking for a photograph to "capture the wonderful memory of eating at Tavern on the Green". Blech, can you BE any more hideously overt and tacky? Please, Tavern, banish this practice immediately. My beau ordered off the Restaurant Week menu: orecchiette to start, salmon as main course, and chocolate cake for dessert. I ordered off the Pre-Theatre menu: iceberg lettuce wedge to start, herb-crusted filet of beef as main course, and creme brulee for dessert. The orecchiette was good but nothing amazing, and while I thoroughly enjoyed the iceberg wedge, it compared with the one I had at Junior's diner. The salmon and beef were delicious and cooked perfectly. The chocolate cake looked amazing, but typical of commercially-prepared desserts was missing the depth of a good chocolate flavor. The creme brulee was a little disappointing because it tasted of torch fuel more than anything. The service was impeccable but having eaten at Tavern, I don't think we need to return."

The Bar

"My friends and I went to the Tavern just for a drink at the bar. I didn't expect the older decor inside, however it was still cool. The bar is upstairs in an attic-like room. Tight squeeze on tables, and the drinks are NY prices, but worth it! My friend's Mohito was very refreshing and the drink I had was very delicious. I would definitely like to go back at night for dinner."

"I had my first experience at Tavern on the Green on my previous visit to NYC. I have read a few negative reviews on this New York landmark, but while Nate and I were strolling through Central Park, I had to give it a whirl. Upon arrival, the restaurant is beautiful from the outside. The landscaping is lovely and unique. The large gorilla out front is something straight out of Edward Scissorhands and at night Tavern resembles a winter wonderland lit romantically with hundreds of lanterns. Inside, the restaurant does appear older and a bit 70’s drab. We recieved excellent service and our food was decent. Kudos to the bar for the wine list and the most wonderful, not too sweet, pear martini. I think that the food is a reason that keeps so many away from Tavern on the Green. So much competition in NYC. A good “try it once” type of place to have the ultimate NYC experience."
