Summary of FAO Schwarz
Whether you have kids or just want to feel like one, the extravagant toys at FAO Schwarz will definitely make you smile. Often most recognized as the location in the Tom Hanks movie Big where Hanks’ character and his boss play chopsticks on the Dance-On-Piano, the toy store has been a landmark in New York City since 1870. A three-story singing clock greets you as you enter and are surrounded by the vivid colors of the life-like stuffed animal menagerie. You’ll feel like you’re at a theme park rather than a toy store, especially once you see the costumed characters wandering around. At the Newborn Nursery, you can choose and adopt your own baby doll with the help of an in-store “nurse,” or take home a purebred stuffed puppy designed in partnership with the American Kennel Club. An elevator located inside a giant robot carries you to the higher floors, where you’ll find walls stacked to the ceiling with board games, Star Wars merchandise, and the bright pink Barbie Department. Among some of the store’s specialties are child-size, gas-powered luxury automobiles, a life-size Darth Vader replica, and a collection of Legos second only to Legoland. If you don’t already feel like a kid in a candy store, stop by FAO Schweetz, a café with delicious ice cream, pastries, milkshakes, and candy.
