Named after frontiersman Daniel Boone, this town of 13,000 people is located 83 miles northwest of Charlotte, amid spectacular high-country scenery in the upper region of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Boone is a good stopover for those traveling along the Blue Ridge Parkway. There are antique shops and opportunities for golf, swimming, fishing, hiking, mountain biking, canoeing, and whitewater rafting. The district also features the largest concentration of alpine ski resorts in the southeast. Appalachian folk musician Doc Watson was born at Deep Gap, east of Boone, in 1923.
In the Daniel Boone Theater, from late June to mid-August, Horn in the West dramatizes the efforts of southern Appalachian citizens to gain independence during the Revolutionary War (1775-83). Adjacent are Daniel Boone Native Gardens, and Hickory Ridge Homestead, which re-creates eighteenth-century mountain life. The Appalachian Cultural Museum covers everything from the natural history of the region to stock-car racing.
Boone sits near the intersection of US-321, US-421, and US-221.
