Jerome
Interesting off-beat historic town, drive up the mountain is not all that scary either
Stopped to wander around Jerome on our way to Sedona in early June. It's a quaint historic old mining town with lots of interesting shops, places to eat and local color. Old buildings galore, perched on the edge of the mountain with incredible views, particularly the old western style jailhouse, complete with bars that's slowly sliding into decay down the hillside. Well documented history with lots of plaques around town explaining what you are looking at, an old mine site you can tour, old mining equipment dotting the streets. Good place to spend the afternoon, morning, day or overnight, strolling around. It's a fascinating location, spectacular scenery and not commercialized at all. The real thing - an old mining town turned almost ghost town turned art colony. The drive up to get there is not scary, even though you do ascend almost 6,000 feet. Just take it slow.
