Memorial Day Weekend 2008 - Chicago

One of my lifetime goals is to see a baseball game in each Major League Ballpark.  Prior to this weekend I had seen the Cincinatti Reds, Atlanta Braves, and Montreal Expos.  I decided it was time to add a couple more to the list.

So, I loaded up the minivan and drove to Chicago for the weekend.  My goal:  see a game at U.S. Cellular Field (White Sox) and at Wrigley Field (Cubs).  I kissed the wife and kids goodbye and headed for the Windy City.

I made a tent site reservation at the Northwest Chicago KOA for the weekend in Union, IL.  The campground was nice.  The site was very spacious and included water and electric for $33 per night.  I found the KOA staff to be quite helpful.  They even went so far as to print driving directions for me to U.S. Cellular Field and gave me the train schedule for the Metra.

A note about camping for you:  if you plan to camp in a tent, always bring tent poles with you.  This was a fact that I knew quite well.  However, that did not keep me from forgetting them and leaving them in the garage at home.  So, problem 1 (actually 2 or 3) had now presented itself.  There was no time to deal with that now though.  I basically threw down the tent on the ground along with my camping chair and cooler and headed off to the ballgame.

U.S. Cellular Field is on the South side of town, which is not a great part of town to be in.  So, I would recommend that you park in the stadium lot ($23) which seemed to have good security.
