Altoona (population 52,000) lies on the eastern slope of the Allegheny Mountains, 96 miles east of Pittsburgh. The Pennsylvania Railroad (today’s Norfolk Southern) founded it in 1849 as a base of operations during construction of the line across the Alleghenies, and it remains a busy railroading center.
Visitors can learn about the Pennsylvania Railroad’s history at the Altoona Railroaders Memorial Museum. Railroading fans can also head to Horseshoe Curve National Historic Landmark to watch freight and passenger trains round a famous 220-degree arc in a rail line constructed in 1854. The dramatic curve, which has an observation area for visitors, was considered a masterpiece of railroad engineering in its time.
Canoe Creek State Park, just 12 miles east of Altoona via US- 22, offers swimming, rental cabins, hiking, cycling, horseback riding, fishing, and boating, as well as wintertime sledding, ice skating and cross-country skiing.
Altoona can be reached by car via I-99 or by rail.
