In the city of brotherly love, you can indulge your penchant for deeply rooted history as well as modern cultural icons. Philadelphia is home to much more than cheesesteaks, the 76ers, Eagles, and Rocky, but these are a great place to start. When you think of America’s fight for independence, Philadelphia undoubtedly comes to mind. This historical city is filled with sites that celebrate the beginning of our nation. Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell, and the home of Betsy Ross are all a part of the historic Center City area. Philadelphia’s historic neighborhoods are a large part of its appeal. Germantown is considered to be the oldest neighborhood in the city, perfect for those tracing the area’s history. Near the southern edge of Center City, the Italian market is another must-see area. This outdoor market also includes a few storefronts that specialize in cheese, meat, and spices.
Cheesesteaks have been a tradition since 1930, and you can’t visit the city without trying one of these uniquely Philadelphian sandwiches. If you’ve never enjoyed a real cheesesteak, for which this city is known, these are two establishments that would be more than happy to initiate you. Jim’s and Geno’s are two rivals located across the street from each other, and the competition is fierce. Don’t mention one to the other, or you risk disgruntling the workers. Philly residents are fiercely loyal to their sports teams – the Phillies, 76ers, Flyers, and Eagles all have leagues of devoted fans and offer great entertainment if you need a break from sightseeing. If you enjoy more subdued entertainment, a leisurely walk around the Philadelphia Museum of Art could be just right. Once you’re finished, you may feel compelled to race up the stairs just like Rocky.
