If you’re able to find Bar Noir, you’ve passed the first test. Make it down the steep, occasionally slippery stairs under the hair salon Liquid on 18th and you’re golden. Arrive before 11 to avoid the usual cover charge at this dark basement hot spot and snag yourself a seat at the front bar just inside the door. The long, narrow space is dark; a single row of tables lines the wall, and a second bar in the back calls to the writhing, sweating, tony things on the dance floor. Bar Noir is Rittenhouse’s playground, an unpretentious refuge from the chichi attitude of the area, where the best of Philly’s designer slobs and relaxed snobs let loose to the surprisingly hip beats of Philly relic DJ Bobby Startup.
