Summary of Italian Market
Philly holds the bragging rights to the largest working outdoor market in the country with the 9th Street Italian Market. The Italian Market, located between Christian and Federal streets, is in full-swing year-round, Tuesdays through Thursdays from 7:30 a.m. till the goods are gone. Both sides of the streets are lined with street vendors, specialty stores and market spaces that offer a multicultural smorgasbord of goods. For an authentically Italian aromatic adventure, step inside the original DiBruno Bros. and inhale the scents of the fine cheeses, aged meats and olives that fill the small and crowded shop. If you look long enough at any selection, the friendly young sales boys will offer samples, so don’t feel shy lingering over that pecorino or the glistening balls of fresh mozzarella. For lovers of pesce, Anastasi’s is a must-try, although watch where you put your hands, as the live crabs are known to get as feisty as the fishmongers.
