Pittsburgh has managed to turn itself into a very livable and enjoyable city, far from the blue-collar steel mill image of decades past. Proof of this is in the Golden Triangle, an area of Pittsburgh that was once occupied by steel mills and is now home to greenery and skyscrapers; they speak to the spirit of renewal and prosperity emerging in this city. Pittsburgh’s residents and visitors have always enjoyed athletics. PNC Park, the home of the Pittsburgh Pirates since 2001, is one of the smallest in major league baseball and provides views of the Allegheny River and Roberto Clemente Bridge. Heinz Field, home to the Pittsburgh Steelers and the NCAA Pitt Panthers since 2001, is a prime destination for football lovers.

If you’re not cheering at a game, go engulf yourself in some culture at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, Carnegie Museum of Art, or the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh. The natural history museum is a hands-on experience, and the children’s museum offers opportunities for play and discovery. Sand Castle Water Park will provide fun for the whole family as well. It’s located along the Monongahela River, just a short drive from the downtown area. Kennywood Historic Park, founded in 1898, is also a great source of recreation for the whole family. With rides, shows, games, and picnic grounds, this historic amusement park has plenty to keep kids and parents busy.
