Yaquina Bay Lighthouse

Love the view!

Not to be confused with the Yaquina Head lighthouse, which replaced the Yaquina Bay lighthouse after only three years of operation; the Yaquina Bay lighthouse is situated very close to the main part of Newport, Oregon. It sits up on a bluff and the view is magnificent! It is totally operated by volunteers and they were all very friendly and well informed. It is best to start the tour off in the basement where there is a video that tells you all about the lighthouse and even touches on the rumor of a ghost. Afterwards, you can browse through the small gift shop and then head upstairs where you have the opportunity to tour the lighthouse. The lighthouse portion of this structure was built on top of a house where a family of nine lived. You have the opportunity to see all the rooms and to try and imagine what it would have been like to live there with seven kids! If you are in Newport, I think that this should be on your list of places to stop. It doesn't take very long and the price is well worth it (FREE).
