review Old Town

San Diego Yesteryear

Have you ever wondered what a city was like back in the 1800s? If so, when you visit San Diego, be sure to visit Old Town; located close to the downtown area. Here they try to recreate what it was like in this first Spanish settlement. They have many shops that you can go through that carries mainly souvenirs from the area. The largest store being the Bazaar Del Mundo where you will find very colorful baskets and pottery made in Mexico. This is an interesting place to take pictures. You can also walk through La Casa De Estudillo which is an adobe house built in 1827 for the commander of the presidio. It is rumored that the ghost of one of the priests that lived there haunts the place. If you want to visit a real haunted house, be sure to visit the Whaley House, a couple blocks away. It is said to be one of the most haunted houses in the United States. During a haunted tour that my son and I took, he got a very interesting picture that really makes you wonder. The best time to visit is in the evening when the crowds are limited to those on an exclusive tour. Just down the road from the Whaley House is El Campo Santo Cemetery; this is one of the original cemeteries for Old Town. If you look at the sidewalk and on the street, you will see little pieces of metal the size of a fifty cent piece, these are grave markers. They didn't move the cemetery, but instead they paved right over the top of it. Some people have noticed that if you park your car near them, things will go wrong with the car; be it a flat tire or engines that won't turn over. Apart from the shopping and ghost hunting, there are many authentic Mexican restaurants. You can even find women making tortillas right on the street. This is a fun place to spend a few hours at; come back in the evening for a whole different atmosphere.
