Ghost Town
An Off the Beaten Track Ghost Town
Located about 23 miles NW of Klingman via Route 93. The humble leavings of Chloride, Arizona, named for local salt deposits, lie in wait for anyone determined enough to find her. Once there, you can sample the eats at Shep’s Mining Camp Cafe’ and soak up some old time atmosphere inside. You can spend the night in the historic Shep’s Miners Inn. There are several well-worn buildings to visit, including authentic antique shops, a general store, and an antique gas station. It’s a very eccentric, shall we say, resident who chooses Chloride as a home – there are many trailer houses, decorated with rusting license plates, bottle trees, assorted junkers, etc. Tons of atmosphere to take in, plus you can walk over to the old mine entrance. Peopled in the 1860’s, Chloride went from mining silver to mining turquoise for Tiffany’s.
