Central Park

New Yorkers may pay through the nose to live in apartments the size of walk-in closets, but they’ve got a backyard that suburbanites can only dream of: 843 acres of gorgeously designed urban parkland filled with every activity and amenity from an Olympic-sized outdoor pool to two ice-skating rinks, a massive reservoir, a nature center housed in a castle, a Swedish marionette theater, two zoos, and miles and miles of jogging, walking, horseback riding, and biking trails. Designed in 1853 by Frederick Law Olmstead and Calvertn Vaux, Central Park may seem like a get-away-from-it-all wilderness, but it’s actually meticulously laid out and maintained. Paths wind around to deliver postcard-perfect views of the grand Bethesda Fountain and Terrace or the elegant Bow Bridge; the popular Wollman Ice Rink seems to nestle between the grand old buildings framing the park; and the Reservoir’s jogging path offers stunningly unobstructed views of both skyline and sky. Events happen in the park year round, but don’t miss the New York Marathon in the fall and summer’s free Shakespeare in the Park and Summerstage concerts.
