The Kitchen at Powhatan Plantation

cozy and yummy

The Kitchen is a cozy place, 7-10 tables. The actual kitchen is very close to the dining area, so the sound of pots and pans and people talking about orders is very audible, but it's fun.

The entirely menu looked appetizing. I was disappointed to find out that the Kitchen was out of foie gras for the foie gras fries, which sounded so yummy, so I ordered corn and crab chowder for my appetizer. For my main dish, I debated between the salmon and the grouper, but it turned out that they were out of salmon, so that made my decision easier. After I ordered, the server brought out a bread basket of still-warm seeded wheat rolls and butter.

I chatted with the couple at the table next to me for quite some time and the server kept checking if I needed water or bread. The corn and crab chowder was delicious: very flavorful and hearty, the corn was well-cooked, the broth was just the right mix of water and seasonings, and the crab was tender and not overdone. Really good. The lemon baked grouper was served with fingerling potatoes, vegetables, and a caper mustard sauce. Everything in that dish came together really well! The caper mustard sauce was a little tart on its own, but the tartness was absorbed and muted by the lightness of the grouper. The potatoes and carrots were well-cooked and seasoned lightly with salt and pepper, definitely not bland. Loved the potatoes.

Unfortunately, I didn't have room for dessert, but the selections were appetizing. I would definitely recommend the Kitchen again - great service, cozy atmosphere, and excellent food.
