mr. chow

This swank, legendary Beverly Hills restaurant gets its name from ultra hyphenate Michael Chow, a restaurateur/designer/actor/painter/collector. See the man, the myth and the legend in portrait form: Jean Michel Basquiat, Andy Warhol and Helmut Newton have painted him, and the results hang in his restaurant alongside other works of art geared toward creating an experience akin to eating at a museum. The London version of Mr. Chow has been serving up Beijing cuisine and international art since 1968, and the Mr. Chow in Beverly Hills (which opened in 1973) is perennially hip, year in and year out. No chop suey here – Mr. Chow the person has outlawed it in an attempt to halt the mix and match bastardization of Chinese cuisine. Whether or not he’s succeeded is open for debate. Try the Peking duck, steamed dumplings, shrimp fried rice or crunchy snow peas, and be prepared to take out a loan for the privilege; even regular, seemingly benign items like bottled water, lettuce wraps or soda are exorbitantly priced. One option for the thriftier among you is to order the prix-fixe dinner, which will set you back about $60 per person. Either way you’ll be sitting among celebrity royalty in a crowded, loud, popular L.A. hotspot.
