The chain of Asian-light restaurants established by Will Ricker certainly pull in the celebs, and none more so than E&O at Ladbroke Grove. (E&O stands for Eastern and Oriental.) The bar is open from noon until 11 p.m. for dim sum, but it’s the main dining room, resplendent in dark wood and golden brown seating, that resounds to the chatter of the well-heeled and well-known. The menu includes the original signature dish of chilli-salt squid (served in newspaper cones) and other tempting dim-sum items such as chicken and coriander gyozas. For vegetarians there is a red aubergine and pumpkin curry, or a tempting selection of futo maki rolls. E&O also does a mean black cod with sweet miso, and specials include the ever-popular phad thai with chicken or prawns. Alternatively, you can choose the set menu, which offers a selection of tempting items and some very un-Oriental desserts, such as chocolate pudding, if you still have room left. Wines can be bought by the glass; try a crisp Sagoma chenin blanc from South Africa. Or splash out on a cocktail, most of which are extremely innovative, such as the liquorice martini, made with Bombay Sapphire gin, sambuca and thai basil.
