The empire of superstar chef Marco Pierre White now extends to six restaurants in London, including the Italian favorite Quo Vadis. There has been a Quo Vadis restaurant here in Soho since the 1930s, and before that, Karl Marx lived in this historic building. Nowadays, crisp white linen tables on a patterned wooden floor add a touch of elegance to the somewhat eclectic artwork in the main restaurant. Marco Pierre White is not one for modesty, as his Rossini and Giacometti private dining rooms are decorated with his own works of art. (Andy Warhol paintings are, somewhat naturally, the chosen works for the opulent red walls of the Warhol Room.) Two menus are available; the menu du jour is served at lunchtime and until 6:45 p.m. in the evenings, and features favorites such as eggs Benedict in hollandaise sauce, potted shrimps, gnocchi “Quo Vadis” and risotto of asparagus and sorrel. The main menu is full of tasty Italian favorites with a subtle twist, nothing too extravagant or scary, such as the loin of tuna wrapped in aubergine, segment of orange, grapefruit and lavender. Pastas are complemented with one or two flavors, such as the rigatoni with wild boar sausage and marjoram, rather than swamped as at several other top restaurants.
