Southern charm and a rich history are synonymous with Charleston, South Carolina. The city is known for the many historical buildings that line the streets. Quite a few of them are homes with intriguing stories, such as the William Aiken House or the Aiken-Rhett House. The William Enston House is one of the few Charleston homes built in the Romanesque Revival style, and was bequeathed to the city by Enston as a place for the city’s elderly to live in comfort; today low- to moderate-income residents reside in the estate’s restored cottages.
Historic sites aren’t limited to homes, though. One of the most famous attractions in Charleston is Fort Sumter National Monument. Known as the place where the Civil War began on April 12, 1861, it is a memorial to all soldiers who were involved in the war. Today, it receives hundreds of thousands of visitors each year who pay their respects to Civil War veterans. To immerse yourself in the area’s rich history, check out Charles Towne Landing. Here, the first successful English colony in Carolina was established in 1670. A protected historical site and nature preserve, Charles Towne Landing is teeming with things to do and see. Make sure you take the opportunity to relax in the beautiful Battery Park, where the Copper and Ashley Rivers meet.
