Tiananmen Square (Tiananmen Guangchang)

The heart of China
When I was in school in China, we were always taught that the heart of China is Tiananmen Square. So, for anyone visiting Beijing, a trip to the square is a must. It’s a huge place, with the People’s Hero Monument in the middle. To its north is the Forbidden Palace. To its west the People’s Congress, and to its east, the national museum. I could never get up early enough to see the flag-raising ceremony. (I did once, though, on the eve of Hong Kong being turned over back to China. We were on the square all night along and I got to see the ceremony.) But try to catch the ceremony when the guards lowers the flag. It’s very solemn.
