It may sound presumptuous, but the unassuming Station Inn is the premier bluegrass venue in the USA. Every mandolin, banjo or fiddle player who’s anybody in the bluegrass world has either been on stage or in the audience in this simple stone building, and it’s almost impossible to see a show that doesn’t feature top players at the top of their game. New restaurants and clubs across the street cater to the young and fashionable, but the Station Inn is all tradition. Well, except for a welcome no-smoking policy — a rarity in these parts. Walk on worn plank floors, sit at a table or on old church pews, and see an intimate show for a reasonable price. Arrive early: There are no advance ticket sales, even for star attractions.
