The cooler-than-thou indie rock crowd is most likely to find their new star of the week playing at The Basement, a low-ceilinged music club that is either intimate or cramped depending on your point of view. The exposed-brick venue is smoke-free, however, so it’s a rare Nashville rock bar that won’t leave you smelling like the Marlboro man. It’s located under the hipster record store Grimey’s, whose owner books the Basement’s bands. At least half the audience always seems to be either musicians from local rock bands or those who wish they were. The beer choices are as obscure as most of the musicians onstage, while the full bar also dispenses generous cocktails. If it’s a low-key night at The Basement, expect good sound and views. On a crowded night, well, claustrophobics may want to stake out a spot by the exit.
