Situated along the San Antonio River and next to Brackenridge Park, this zoo is considered one of the finest in America, housing more than 3,500 animals representing more than 700 species. The recently renovated “big cat” exhibit draws big crowds, as does the bird collection, which is one of the largest in the United States. Allow time for wandering around; even though there is plenty of directional signage, the exhibits are a confusing maze. The zoo offers educational programs weekly and is available for private events. Call for more information. Admission: USD8 adults; USD6 children ages 3-11 and seniors age 62 and older. Children ages two and younger are admitted free.

Nice Zoo

Reviewed by SGroves on February 06, 2007

SGroves' rating:

"The San Antonio Zoo is not the biggest zoo you will ever go to; however, it is a clean zoo with a wide variety of exhibits. It is a great way to spend an afternoon. The reptile and bird exhibits are real stand outs. On a hot summer day looking at the snakes in the reptile house can be a nice reprieve from the heat. The kids will love this zoo because it has a nice petting zoo with a large playground attached. Additionally, there is a children’s learning zoo area where they can see a really cool ground hog exhibit both from the topside to the inside tunnel area. As well, many of the front animal exhibits especially the smaller primate section look like they are set in a cave-like environment. It can be fun running around and finding places to hide and to watch. There is a cute train just outside the zoo near the front entrance that you can purchase a ticket for and ride around the adjacent park. (Not really for the older kids) The zoo is in Brackenridge Park which makes having a picnic lunch for before or after your visit a great place to go. "
