Expert Tip. Beneath Istanbul lie hundreds of gloomy Byzantine cisterns that date from the time when the city was known as Constantinople. Supported by 336 marble columns, the Sunken Palace is the largest of the cisterns, able to store thousands of cubic metres of water in case of drought.
