KAS, 41km east of Patara, is beautifully situated, nestled in a curving bay against a backdrop of vertical, 500m-high cliffs. However, what was a quaint fishing village as recently as the early 1980s has grown to become a tourist metropolis. There’s no beach to speak of, but there’s plenty to see in the countryside around, and the town does get lively at night. It’s also the site of ancient Antiphellos, the ruins of which litter the streets of the modern town, as well as covering the peninsula to the west. Most interesting of these is the lion tomb, a towering structure that had two burial chambers, at the top of Uzun Çarsi. Some 500m from the main square, along Hastane Caddesi, a small, almost complete Hellenistic theatre looks out to sea; on a nearby hilltop stands a unique rock-cut Doric tomb, also almost completely intact.
